The Benefits of Hybrid and Online Courses

BACKGROUND:

South Mountain Community College offers a variety of hybrid and online courses; many courses are web-enhanced, and the college uses Blackboard (TM) as its Learning Management System (LMS).  These courses provide a greater learning flexibility for students interested in broadening their academic pursuits through the "virtual" classroom.

The latest student data from the SMCC 2010-2011 academic year is that the typical online student enrolled in online courses as compared to other students in that category were identified as

1) newly enrolled (49.3%),
2) 20-24 years old (30.6%),
3) female (61.2%), and
4)
White (31.5%) or
5) Hispanic (31%).

It is estimated that sixty-five (65%) percent of students have taken a course entirely online.

Hybrid courses contain online elements mixed with the face-to-face interaction of the traditional classroom.  This allows students to have periodic contact with their instructor and other students; online courses, on the other hand, are only available via the Internet exclusively, requiring a computer or laptop, and do not have face-to-face contact with other students or the instructor in a classroom setting.  Click on any of the links in the right hand menu/box to view and/or evaluate our hybrid and online offerings.

Faculty who teach online or hybrid courses find that teaching in either or both formats allow them to consolidate and disseminate course content information in one distributive location at all times, and in keeping that information relatively organized and available.

Independent student learners find online course offerings practical for their busy and hectic lifestyle; others may find that hybrid courses fit their "interactive" niche preference of only occasional person-to-person contact.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you are an instructor planning on developing a hybrid or online course, please contact your division chair AND any of the Teaching and Learning (TLC) staff at 602-243-8077.  Thank you.
